Visual design Vs Usability

I was going through a presentation slide of Jeff Patton where he mentioned about a book, Donald Norman's Design of everyday things.

While Visual Design certainly can affect usability, it’s quite possible for a product to have pleasing visual design, but intolerable usability.

Well, rightly said.

Infact they believe in being in herds

Last time I wrote about 'the herd mentality' and I mentioned about how we exhibit the herd mentality in our behavior. But I have seen the actual herd behaving in practice. I was surprised to see how these animals comfy to be with their kind, no matter what. They even dare to risk their life to be with the herd. Thanks to these creatures and their behavior which made me wait 20 mins on the road to Jomsom.

My life!

life is no brief candle for me. It is a sort of splendid torch which i have got hold of for the moment, and i want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations. -- George Bernard Shaw

I believe in living my life this way. Hope I succeed on that.

Changing things!

I love changing things (even my looks and that includes my hair style). I mostly work for changing things for good. But at times you need change also to know how good the current things are.

The herd mentality ( We think in herds)

Back in my first years days as an engineering student I had to take a daily ride from Ratnapark to Pulchowk at the peak traffic hour. There always used to be a rush for a seat in a microbus. I struggled for the first couple of weeks. Then I discovered a pattern. The microbus makes a roundtrip from Sahid gate to Ratna Park back to Pulchowk. When I spotted it, I started waiting for the microbus in the Sahid gate instead. Couple of months went on smooth without much hassle and I was always guaranteed a seat as people gets down at Sahid gate too. Then people started noticing the pattern too. Then everyone followed the same pattern waiting for the microbus at Sahid gate. I was convinced we think in herds.
We have an attitude; if everyone else is doing it, it must be the thing to do. We demonstrate this syndrome in almost all the paths of our life, not just waiting for a microbus at Shahidgate. With this syndrome we will have a longer tail on shorter time on almost everywhere.
We find this pattern in companies too. In any country when a new sector is opened, there will be herds like in telecom, retail and aviation. Most of the time we are guided to the herd not by our instincts, rather by seeing what is going on with others. People might execute herd mentality if he sector is new and unexplored and profitable too. Sometime ago people from the Himalayan region left their jobs and work to be in the herd of the Yarsagumba collection. The same mentality has affected Nepal’s share market too.
Sometimes if you want certainty and clarity wait for others to take a position and see how they do. Then you will know what works. You are in the verge of following a herd. I see the syndrome in my friends too. They follow the same path of finishing their engineering, appear in GRE and apply for a master’s degree at American university.
Herd mentality is perhaps a natural extension of human behavior. We always want to be in group. Charles Mackey says ‘Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one’. But I feel if we know what we want, there is nothing wrong in it. As in life I am not actually in competition with others. I want to be a part of the life and crowd yet stand out.

Me, Myself [Ram Krishna Wagle]

About myself:
The typical things about me: I am full of energy, feisty, optimistic, pragmatic and extroverted (I really am). But, really this may sound pretty boring and anyone could make a long list of idiosyncrasies and characteristics. I love to live, breathe and enjoy as everyone does (so this makes me normal). I am incredibly complex and yet easy to understand and good to hang out with(I think so). I value my frens, my family and my freedom. And I believe, to really understand someone, you have to come to know what they value, stand for, and are passionate about.
I believe being passionate about something you adore is the way of living your life.

My goal is simple: Live each day to its fullest and leave everything i touch better than it was before i arrived. Arrogant? may be. But its who i am and I always love keep moving.

I love reading books: mostly I go for fiction (coz they are easy to find) but recently non-fiction is the genre that interests me more. I know its good to write but haven’t found myself doing so (there is difference between knowing a path and walking a path).

I am a software developer by profession and I work in an outsource software company here in Kathmandu.

I love to travel to exotic places and I feel guilty to say I haven’t explored the Himalayan kingdom to the fullest but I have been to few places and I believe traveling is the best way to learn things around.

My alias is ‘waamax’. Almost all my frens call me ‘wagle’ (I am rarely called by my real name ‘Ram Krishna’). During my +2 days they made it even shorter to ‘waa’. All I did was to add ‘max’ to it. My official site is under this name waamax.

I am very goal centered and my topic of interests includes business and computing. And I know the difference between my job and my career (hopefully they are the same)

I am good at sports (football, cricket , blah blah..) and I have no regrets of being more of a player than a student in my college life.

I love biking (my suzuki gen) as I regard it not just a bike, rather my freedom.

The greatest assets I have acquired in my life are my frens and I would love to keep discovering them.

I love being called romantic and I love music of all sorts (coldplay, metallica, pink floyd being my all time favs).

my wildest dreams include knowing everything under the sun, being a space tourist, touring all the countries of the world, and creating a world of my own (I don’t know exactly what that means). I enjoy taking with strangers.

I love to live my life surrounded by the ones who love me. In fact this gives the meaning to my life and the reason for my living. Thanks everyone.

I wish everyone I know do well and progress in his/her life. Be blessed.

I believe in living each day doing one particular thing that scares me.
Presently I live in beautiful (not always) and full of life Kathmandu city with my fren Prashant and life gets better everyday.

Cheers to life!!

Using metaphors

well at times things are best described when nothing is told as it is (i mean literal here), rather describing it with symbols or by implicit comparision. you guessed it right; using metaphor. using metaphor means using symbols to somebody or something that is not meant literally but to make a comparision. At times using metaphor may prove be more effective and creative to covey messages.

As a software developer and presently working on the software development, i didn't meant anything about fire or flame while saying:
***"The interface team is on fire with brilliant ideas. I heard the the last build went up in flames. I got scorched when I mentioned the flame-out in the last meeting and you got burnt when you wrote the email about it last week. I keep getting flamed on the company blog about changing our design method. I heard the next project is already toast- burnt to a crisp. I cannot seem to light a fire under the librarian on this project. Her fire went out went she was switched to part time."

Our teachers did sound like horticulturalists when they talk these:
The basic ability of a student to learn could be compared to a seed and their role is to provide the right soil and sunlight for their growth. some students are pot bound while others flower and reach fruition. some students need a hothouse to develop while others could prosper in a desert.

Financial people are also in the race. it gives me impression that sometimes their talks sounds like as if they are plumbers. When they talk about flood the market, cash flow, liquidity, solvency deposits, float a loan, capital drain, underwater pricing etc. its hard to believe they are talking about money management.

You might say, i can't be saying this anywhere but in circus when i say this:
***" I was told to stop clowning around. It's a real circus in there. I'm working without a net with that new client. This is turning into a high wire act -- if we lose our balance, it's a long way to the ground. Who's the ringmaster of this escapade? She thinks she can get us to follow her commands by cracking the whip. I'm not jumping through his hoops unless the spotlight is on me. That job calls for a daredevil acrobat, not some stupid dog tricks. The only way to catch the next trapeze is to let go of this one."

it is found that the metaphors can affect our thinking and emotions. what if we could use the financial term to describe our relationships as we describe our financial terms using plumbing words? eg. the marriage was bankrupt; i would like to invest more in this relationship; you value much in my life; i hope my love interest is compounded daily.

note: *** the metaphor extracts in this post are taken from creative think

do you ever think you became the worst version of yourself?

Sometimes i feel i have become the worst version of myself. It is said that during a human lifetime one performs one billionth of his/her potential. There are infinite ways, infinite destinations and its only you to decide that. At times i feel i am doing the opposites and choosing the worst among the alternatives.
Well that could have been a coincidence but nothing just happens, every thing happens for a reason. And for the things happening to you, you are the only cause.
That’s when i think i have been my worst blueprint. But i can always regain my focus and hard work to become the better version of myself. hmm. let’s get back to work.

Avoiding the nero syndrome..

It is found that someway or the other we become the victims of this syndrome. If we have this syndrome then we couldn’t deliver to our potential and we get ourselves stuck up in trivial. For those who are not known to the term ‘Nero syndrome’ let me put some light on that. Person with Nero syndrome involves doing things less important ignoring things of much value at that particular time. eg. during titanic collapse, as the ship was sinking in the Atlantic some of the crew members were arranging the chairs in the back instead of making arrangement for the safety of the passengers on board.
At times we get ourselves involved in the things that matters less. The only remedy to the Nero syndrome is :”Never lose your focus”. Being focused enables you to deliver right action at right time. Known the path let’s start walking it before its too late.

What is in the words?

– Do big words have the better chance to convey messages compared to the normal ones? Yes they do. Well it has been the season of building word power for the guys as they prepare for their GRE exams. For me I am not taking the GRE. But i am left wondering if i am missing some great vocabularies by missing the GRE exams preparation. Ye i do believe that, the more words you have in store, you got better chance to explain things more clearly and more precisely. Apart from looking intellectual and cool you learn to be precise and better at explaining things. Well i guess i should be following the words if at all not the exams.

How Fool do you think You are!

If without giving a deep thought you replied I am not at all a fool, let me quickly give you one important benefit of being a fool; at times thinking like a fool help us to look at a problem in a helpful way. I follow the mantra of "if a thing is worth doing, it's worth doing well". When I give the same thing a second thought as a fool i might say "you don't have to do things well! indeed its okay to do things poorly; otherwise you'll never let yourself be a beginner at a new activity". In this case i expanded my horizon of working field by thinking as a fool.

A fool notices things that other people overlook. A fool may extol the trivial what other people took for granted. So thinking like a fool exposes us to the situation that we rarely question. Thinking like a fool at times may be absurd, cryptic and might take the contrary position but it might help us to see the other side of the big picture.

Its no surprise that some of the greatest solutions, discovery and inventions are made thinking as a fool. When newton started questioning about the falling apple other people thought it was obvious and too trivial to question about. Newton was a fool to think of such trivial. But he proved the world wrong by bringing the world's one of the biggest discoveries (gravitation force) initiated by that fool thought.

So the great benefit of the fool's antics and observation is that they stimulate our thinking. Now i understand why Steve jobs always say "Stay hungry, Stay foolish".

Book Review: 'Rich Dad Poor Dad'

Book Review : Robert kiyosaki (Rich Dad, Poor Dad)
-- This book has the power to brain wash you and its a good thing for you. All of us are brillinant, intelligent and professional in our work or field we are interested in. But in finances (which is the major part of how you will spent the rest of your life) we all lack interest and financial knowledge. Robert emphasizes on gaining the financial intelligence so that you can master the art of 'money working' and make money work for you. The primary message he conveys through this book is "Don't work for money, Let the money work for you".

-- some interesting things he points out to support his idea.
- you work only 8 hr per day for money, but your money work 24 hr a day for you
- Robert recommends Peter Lynch's book 'Beating the Street' for stock investment
- money is nothing but an idea
- the art of money making is moving with time. In the information age of today you must be really quick to adapt yourself to the changes
- your greatest gift is your time and your mind
- you have the power and the right to use every rupee that land in your hand. spend it properly and u get rich or spend it foolishly to make yourself poor.
- money game CASHFLOW
- be focused
- put your more eggs in few baskets rather than putting fewer eggs in more baskets
- cynics crytisize and winners analyze
- difference between broke and poor (broke is temporary but poor is eternal)
- difference between; i can't afford and how can i afford it. if you say i cant' afford it, your mind stops working.but the latter opens up your mind to cretive thinking of the ways to affording your wants
- answer to beat your laziness is little greed
- invest first in your education
- pay yourself first, the bills at the end
- savings are only used to create more money, not to pay bills
- pay your brokers well, source of great information
- its good to pay brokers well than to tip in a restaurant
- Take responsibility for your finances or take orders all your life. you're either a master of money or a slave to it

Well all i can say about this book is, this is a book worth reading and it works to make you make financially intelligent. Go for it. A must read.

I love Feedback, Both ways

Sometimes its fun to do things you normally discard (there are plenty in my case). I was going through an article 'Who is driving your car in the management mantra section of the himalayan times perspective, by Kalpana Arora. I disagreed with her article on couple of points and send her feedback with a request to make me clear on the issues in her article (i told you na it was fun).

My mail read this:
--
hi kalpana,
It was great to go through your article 'Who's driving your car?' under the management mantra of The himalayan times, today.
The story of the real sarathi (your driver) was interesting and matched the content perfectly.
But however i am complaining about the use of the word 'sarathi' to represent two entirely different personnnel, your driver and the CEO of an organization.
Do both have same level of influence to their work force to make a difference. While you say 'in driver's seat', in case of your driver he is actually in the driver's seat in literal meaning. But for the head of an organization it is a metophorical representation as to mean the power and influence he can stir to the organizational success.
So is the use of the word 'sarathi' to represent both of them justified?
I just want to get your actual thoughts.

I am a computer engineer and working on an outsource company and a 'business and management' enthusiast.

thanks for the article.
--

I had hardly expected a reply (though rabin said there will be a reply). But to my surprise I got it.

She read:
--
Dear Mr Wagley

Thanks for your feedback and response. Thanks also for your complaint-Actually I just wanted to highlight the importance of the person driving the organization-so much so that just the change of one man there brings about a sea change in the organization.

I used my driver's story just to highlight the importance of the person who is in the driver's seat -an actual driver in case of a car and the CEO or whatever his designation may be in case of an organization.

In the ultimate analysis efficiency , efefctiveness , productivity , goal achievement is all dependent upon the manner in which he is leading his people.

You may be a very punctual and dedicated person -however whether you will reach your destination on time and be able to conduct your business effectively is dependent to a large extent on the person who drives your car-if he is not smart and punctual you have had it

Similarly in an organization we may be very dedicated , efficient and capable people -however if the head of the organization is not -despite our good work the organization may not make any headway.

I hope I have been able to clarify my point.

If I have hurt your feelings by comparing a driver and a CEO I apologize -however I think you will understand my point now.

Warm regards

--
Anyway it was fun.

Moral: If its your creation you got to reply to all the questions. And you get better with the feedbacks (This is not a fable, lol)

Now tell me which season you love the most!

I love leaves (some of my close frens only know why). I have been a bit poetic about loving leaves (they tell me that) but the fact is that there are more than one reasons. Here are some of the pics of the leaves to make your decision on 'deciding which is your favorite season' easier.

Definitely Autumn, right? Just wait.

This will make things interesting.

Book Review "Waiting for the Barbarians"

"The Magistrate lives peacefully in a garrison of the Empire located in the frontier of a country (South Africa is never mentioned, though suggested), which from time to time has been attacked by barbarians. The arrival of a general from the big city, however, brings horror to the town, dragging in barbarians to be tortured and reveal plots against the Empire.

Soon after, the Magistrate feels attracted to one of the barbarian women. She's been left one-eyed and injured in one foot. The Magistrate takes care of her and the gossip spreads among the settlers.

The military authorities in the big city hear about it, and the Magistrate is punished by the same Empire he defended: he's exposed to public shame, isolated, tortured to reveal the 'attack plans' he made with the barbarians and the woman, and finally freed, but condemned to live like a beggar."

Good Things in Life!

Waking up beside the girl you love.
Listening to her breath when she sleeps.
Fruity toast in the morning
A shower after a days hard work
A shave with a hot, sharp razor after the shower.

Pulchowk Memoirs.

Well its not that hard to start writing about an experience because you knew it from start to end coz' its you who have experienced the moments. It’s like answering the questions from the course you have well prepared. The tough job is to arrange them in the order that matters.

The first year was a surprise. I was never sure I was going to complete my BE computer Engineering from pulchowk campus. The new juvenile young first year life was good and fresh. Then suddenly the results started getting worse. It was hard to adjust out of the top ten ranks as it was the first experience of its kind for me. Academics were never satisfying. Its was discouraging from all the aspects. At early second year I was determined for my abroad transfer then I felt a year was a long time to waste. Then I started to live with constraints and my weakness. Indeed my academics started getting better after I changed my approach (Anyway I wasn't too conscious about my results anyway). Life was duller compared to my life at GBS. There were enough sports and games in 2nd year and life was okay.

The only thing I want to make sure is not to feel that I missed so many things after I miss them. So enjoyment was the topmost priority. Life started gaining momentum during the latter half of my college life. College life is a good experience. You won't miss anything except the classes. Life could be designed and structured as I wish. So it was good for me as I can't live without complete freedom. I always believe in life with no regrets. No regrets to the things I did and I didn't. So if possible either do all the things you love or ignore the things you don't. Life was always away from home for me. I have been away from home even before I had started talking about the issues like friendship, love etc.

The next important thing was my adjustment to the environment outside of the border life. I had an illusion that life is always full of joys and good things (it's a reality in gbs). I began to think out of the box. It was really a hard adjustment to make. I just wonder these days how I used to handle the problems during my +2 days. I was so naive and so soft within. I must admit I had been tough and little bad within these days.

My stay in pulchowk campus didn't necessarily teach me to fall in love. I have learned that since I was a little boy. Infact what I learnt was how to be serious about your love and think rationale about it. One important lesson I learned was a guy and a girl have a distinct different ways of thinking. If you are to deal with girls in any matter then you have to start thinking like them.

The important discovery was my career path. I understood what I would love to do for the rest of my life. This is an important discovery. Computing and business became the topics of my interests. I am surprised myself how I came to be interested in business.

Friendship was a chapter I would always like to study for the rest of my life. Frens here in pulchowk were great. Still I feel we could have created lot more opportunities to enjoy. I will cherish all those moments shared with them. They were always wonders.

Four years completed and now I wonder how these past years were. I ask myself if I had achieved everything I had wished before these 4 years or are there still many things to achieve. One thing I won't do is to regret what ifs. But I would take all these experience because I believe life's still long way to go. No experience is a bad experience unless you gain anything from it.

Confidence is the most important thing I gained I guess during these half decade. Life's not over. Today is the first day for the rest of my life. I am still young at heart and I got ferns like me. And I am dreaming like I will live forever. Life is sure to rock.

Love and Marriage!

I told you i love short stories. Good stories define the magic of art. Here is one of my favs from the era of plato.

One day, Plato asked his teacher, “What is love? How can I find it?” His teacher answered, “There is a vast wheat field in front. Walk forward without turning back, and pick only one stalk. If you find the most magnificent stalk, then you have found love.” Plato walked forward, and before long, he returned with empty hands, having picked nothing. His teacher asked, “Why did you not pick any stalk?” Plato answered, “Because I could only pick once, and yet I could not turn back. I did find the most magnificent stalk, but did not know if there were any better ones ahead, so I did not pick it. As I walked further, the stalks that I saw were not as good as the earlier one, so I did not pick any in the end. His teacher then said, “And that is love.” On another day, Plato asked his teacher, “What is marriage? How can I Find it?” His teacher answered, “There is a thriving forest in front. Walk forward without turning back, and chop down only one tree. If you find the tallest tree, then you have found marriage”. Plato walked forward, and before long, he returned with a tree. The tree was not thriving, and it was not tall either. It was only an ordinary tree. His teacher asked, “Why did you chop down such an ordinary tree?” Plato answered, “Because of my previous experience. I had walked through the field, but returned with empty hands. This time, I saw this tree, and I felt that it was not bad, so I chopped it down and brought it back. I did not want to miss the opportunity.” His teacher then said, “And that is marriage. You see son Love is the most beautiful thing to happen to a person, its an opportunity but you don’t realize its worth when you have it but only when its gone like the field of stalks. Marriage is like the tree you chopped, it’s a compromise . . .

Dust in the wind.

The farewell day. it was okay. the performance was not as we expected. anyway me singing "dust in the wind" was just okay. but she missed it.

thanks to sagar and abhisek. complained about the party ending too soon. enjoyed with guys in the open. sang to our fullest. joined the guys from electronics and electrical. the party got bigger and wilder. beers all over.

guys said i talked about friendship. i was a bit high and my memory wasn't working. shared so many things with almost all my friends present there. just wonder at times, why i go on talking about my guys and friedship when i am high. may be they are the assests of my highest priority. They are.

no much memory afterwards. wait i remember being dragged in the stairs. Thanks whosever. found myself in my favourite bed but a bit messed up.

Thank You Frens!

Thank You Frens!

What does it take to shape a man?
His family and friends
Are guiding lights along the path.
Their influence never ends.

And so I'd like to thank the folks
Who've helped me come this far.
I'll live my life to make them proud,
And here is who they are:

MY FRIENDS... MY FAMILY..

These are my constellations,
The stars that I steer by.
With all my heart, I thank them
As I spread my wings to fly.

'Memory Quotes'

“We do not remember days, we remember moments. The richness of life lies in memories we have forgotten.”

“Always remember to slow down in life; live, breathe, and learn; take a look around you whenever you have time and never forget everything and every person that has the least place within your heart.”

“A moment lasts all of a second, but the memory lives on forever.”
